Who am I?
Hi. My name is Karan Singh, and Bigfoot Guitars is my baby.
Feel free to check out my work using the menu tabs on the top of this page
(The blog is new, and will be updated regularly over the coming weeks)
I started playing the guitar way back in college, and haven’t put it down since! Having started on an acoustic guitar, I gradually made the transition to playing an electric, and of late have rediscovered my gorgeous Martin DM to spend quality time with. Largely influenced by classic rock and the blues, there’s no dearth of riffs to learn! Over the years I also started singing, and spent a few short years with a band in Delhi. Music is (like with a lot of us!) a huge part of my life, and I’d be nowhere without it – whether it’s the lyrics to my favorite Eddie Vedder track when I’m low, or whether it’s the power chords to Baba O’Riley when I feel like rocking out!
How I decided to become a Luthier (Guitar / Instrument Craftsman) -
Over the past decade, I managed to amass a rather respectable collection of guitars – 4 electric and 2 acoustic, with the big 5 names – Gibson, Fender, Martin, Ibanez and Epiphone included. My Gibson SG was facing serious problems with intonation and action, and I handed it over to a pretty respectable Guitar store in Delhi to fix. Unfortunately I got it back in worse condition than it was sent it, not to mention the few scratches that were thrown in for free! At this point I decided to learn how to do basic setups and repairs at home. Courtesy of the internet, and a number of books on guitar repair, that got going pretty well. I repaired my own instruments, then guitars belonging to friends, and eventually started taking on clients.
To me, the next step in the progression was – how tough CAN it be to make your own guitar? Once this thought entered my mind, it refused to leave. A few months, a few online orders, and many, many US Dollars later I had (in theory) the knowledge required to build a guitar (Oh that satisfied feeling!!). I started my first build with a Telecaster style electric guitar, which eventually got presented to a close friend of mine in Thailand. Seeing how doable it was, I figured I may as well try and expand the building sessions, and so I started Bigfoot Guitars. Currently, I’m on an acoustic trip, and am in the process of replicating a Martin Dreadnought which has been ordered by a friend. Anyone who tells you that acoustic guitars are easy to make have lost their few remaining brain cells! But the sense of achievement with every step is incredible \m/
At Bigfoot Guitars, only the best tone woods are used – and you, the customer can decide the various combinations you like. Pretty much EVERYTHING is customizable! So take some time, think over what you want, and give me a buzz!
